Location: Gauripur Upazila Sadar is located 20 km east of Mymensingh District Headquarters. The district headquarters have communication through both the railway line and the road. The old Brahmaputra river is located on the west side of the Upazila Sadar. The ancient architecture of the upazila attracts tourists.

Nomenclature of the Upazila: Naming of the upazilas could not bring any accurate information. According to some, the landlord of Gauripur, Sri Krishna Chowdhury, had a girl by the name of Gauri, after which the name of the upazila has been named Gauripur. According to many, this place has been named after the Gauri deity of the Hindus.

Creation of Upazila: The upazila was formed on 7th February, 8th from the Ishwarganj police station. Later, on 5 October, 1 more union from Phulpur thana was added to this police station. The late President, Mr. Ahsan Uddin Chowdhury, announced the Gauripur police station as a promoted police station on December 8. It was later converted into an upazila by an official announcement.

It is bounded by phulpur and east dhala upazilas on the north, gouripur upazila on the north, eshwarganj upazila on the south, kendua upazila on the east.
